Dr. Levitan grew up in Ohio. As an undergraduate, she majored in wildlife biology at the University of Vermont. Before continuing on to veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, she worked in the Florida keys at the Newfound Harbor Marine Institute (where she met her husband), at the New England Aquarium in Boston (perks included running whale watches and working with the marine mammal stranding program), and at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School as an ultrasound technician in the large animal hospital.
 
After graduating from U Penn, Dr. Levitan spent time on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, conducting research on sources of bacterial contamination on shellfish farms on the island. She also worked for the Wildlife Department in the veterinary school at the University of California, Davis planning a field course for veterinary students before settling in Tallahassee with her family in 1994.
 
She is married to Don Levitan, a full professor in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology section at Florida State University. They have a son and a daughter, a border collie mix and fish. Dr. Levitan loves to spend time outdoors with her family, hiking, canoeing, snorkelling and anything that involves the ocean. She also enjoys watching most sports and reading whenever she gets a chance.
